Country life with benefits

In and around Bad Liebenwerda, you’ll find everything you need for a great weekend: purple heather to walk through in the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft nature reserve, a pretty old town to while away some time drinking coffee and thermal baths to drift away in. You can also climb in a canoe and explore the Spreewald around Wahrenbrück. For something different, stay overnight in a wooden cabin in Ferienparadies Waldidylle.

Romantic igloo with lake view

You’ve never slept more beautifully. The igloos at Templin Lake combine the cuddle factor of a hobbit cave with the originality of centuries-old craftsmanship. Enjoy a coffee at sunrise on the wooden deck and an evening glass of wine in the glow of fairy lights. This is just the perfect escape. You can get an igloo for 2 or 4 people.

Night in a museum park

It's the stuff dreams are made of: sleeping alone under the stars. But in this adventure, you’re wrapped up warm in a sleep cube, with salty snacks. There are sleeperoos dotted around Brandenburg, but we like this one, nestled between atmospheric old furnace chimneys. You’ll see goats, swans, and maybe even a fox, and can listen to a starry sky audio guide as you gaze through the ‘panorama window’. Children and pets are welcome.

Early morning swims are the best. Especially if you can get straight back into bed afterwards. In this sustainable sleep pod for up to three people, you’re literally at the water’s edge. With a transparent roof and large panorama windows, it’s like sleeping outdoors but with full weather protection. Cosy up with soft blankets and pillows, a mattress made from soybean oil, energy-saving LED lights and a ‘chill pack’ with organic snacks and drinks. If you can leave the pod, hire boats in the harbour and eat tasty seafood and burgers at Smutjes Kombüse. You can even bring your dog and take her on an SUP.

It’s not a typo: Coconat is short for ‘community and concentrated work in nature’. Here,  guests and long-term residents work and live together in a historic mansion. You can choose a room to suit your budget: from high-end design to wooden pod in a shared room. Or take it outside with glamping options like circus wagons, caravans and floating tents at lofty heights. Or bring your own tent or mobile home. It’s beautiful, social and peaceful – and work isn’t really work if you take it here for a few days. Read more at Good Travel.

B&B with village charm

There’s a German saying: “wo Fuchs und Hase sich gute Nacht sagen”. It means a place far from civilisation. This B&B is aptly named. This historic cattle barn in Ribbeck village offers beautiful and uncomplicated accommodation. The attic bedrooms lead onto a spacious common room – great for groups. And in the middle of the Havel landscape, you may well be saying goodnight to foxes and hares.

Kenners LandLust is a place to take a deep breath. Barbara Kenner and her wolf-expert husband, Kenny, renovated this huge house in 1999 to offer guests a climate-conscious way of life. Parents can lay back in the wellness area while the kids (3+) are taken on guided forest walks. We recommend full board as the local, organic, homecooked food is delicious. And you’ll have more time to lie in the hammock at the bottom of the garden.

This is an overnight experience you won’t forget. Three ‘tree-houses’ on stilts stand 6m above the ground, sheltered by willow trees. Located right beside the river Elbe, sandy beaches and a bird sanctuary, this is a true oasis. Choose from ‘Jojo’, ‘Lotti’ and ‘Anni’ houses and spend the days watching nature float or fly by from your treetop perch. Then spend the evenings in the outdoor hot tub gazing at stars. You’ll feel so far away from it all you’ll forget what ‘it all’ was in the first place.

Plastic-free in Lübeck

Lübeck’s beautiful old town is always worth a visit – and if your transport and  accommodation are sustainable, all the better. Anni Hauberg-Lahoud and her husband Dany have set up two environmentally friendly holiday apartments in their 1910s house, that will give you a taste of a packaging-free lifestyle – but without being preachy. A warning: the light, bright apartments are furnished with so much love, you might want to move in.
